Thomas Hampson (baritone)

Walter Thomas Hampson ( born June 28, 1955 in Elkhart, Indiana) is an American baritone.

Life and artistic work

Hampson grew up in Spokane ( Washington). He was a student of Marietta Coyle, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Martial Singher and Horst Günter, he sings operas, operettas, musicals, oratorios and songs. His repertoire includes the title and main roles of Mozart's operas ( Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte ), Verdi ( Don Carlo, La Traviata, Macbeth, Simon Boccanegra ) and Tchaikovsky ( Eugene Onegin ), as well as from the works of Gluck ( Iphigenia in Tauris ), Wagner ( Parsifal ), Massenet, Strauss ( Arabella ), Busoni, Szymanowski and Lehàr ( The Merry Widow ). Positive criticism was Thomas Hampson particularly as an interpreter of the great tradition of art song ( Schubert, Schumann, Wolf), as well as lesser-known works of the Song history (Barber, Berlioz, Copland, Ives, Meyerbeer ) and the orchestral and piano songs of Gustav Mahler.

Hampson, a daughter from his first marriage, lives since 1986 (with interruptions ), with Austrian Andrea Herber stone together, 2014 in New York and Vienna. The two are married to each other. His son is the Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni.
