Thomas Harrison Hair

Thomas Harrison Hair ( * 1810 in Newcastle upon Tyne; † 11 August 1875 ) was a British artist.

Life and work

Thomas Harrison Hair was born around 1810 in the county of Northumberland in North East England, the son of a tanner, John Hair of Scotswood.

He probably began his training in Tyneside at the lithographers Mark Lambert (1781-1855), an assistant of Thomas Bewick wood cutter. At the age of 18 years, Thomas Hair interested in subjects from mining his home in 1828 was the watercolor Hebburn Colliery.

In the thirties Hair went to London; some of his paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1828 and 1842 a series of watercolors, which served as preparatory studies for the 1844 published book Views of the Collieries in the Counties of Northumberland and Durham was born. More than 40 etchings represented the path of coal from extraction to processing and rail transport to the loading facilities dar. on the rivers The graphical transfer of the watercolors were completed at least five erasers, which took about five years for work. The result is characterized by a high level of skill and provides a rare glimpse into the early industrial development of England.
