Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility ( TJNAF ), colloquially called Jefferson Lab or JLab, is a particle physics laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy in Newport News.

History

The TJNAF was founded in 1984. By the year 1996 was the name of the research center Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility ( CEBAF ). In 2009, the research center employed more than 675 employees and more than 2,000 scientists.

Since 2004, plans to develop our of the accelerator to a maximum electron energy of 12 GeV. Construction began on 15 September 2008.

The CEBAF delivered a continuous electron beam in particular for nuclear physics research.

Construction

The central apparatus of the TJNAF is a linear accelerator for electrons, specifically a recirculating linac, in which the electron beam is sent repeatedly through the two linacs. He used superconductor technologies (or SRF, Superconducting radio frequency) for the cavity resonators. The maximum electron energy is 6 GeV, an upgrade to 12 GeV is under construction ( 2010). Attached is a Free Electron Laser.
