Thomas Kent

Thomas Kent Irish Tomás Ceannt (* 1865, † May 9, 1916 ) was an Irish nationalist, who was executed on 22 April 1916, and for involvement in the preparation for the Easter uprising because of a firefight with the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC ).

Kent was a member of a family known nationalists in Castlelyons, County Cork. They participated in the preparations for the Easter Rising. However, when the mobilization was proclaimed, she stayed at home.

The uprising was crushed and the RIC was sent out across the country to arrest known sympathizers participated, including many prominent members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, Sinn Féin and the Irish Volunteers. On the Kent property, the security forces encountered heavy opposition from Thomas and his brothers Richard, David and William. In the firefight that lasted about four hours a RIC policeman lost his life. David and Richard Kent were seriously injured.

Thomas and William came before the court-martial. William was acquitted, while Thomas was sentenced by the court to death by firing squad. The sentence was carried out on 9 May 1916. Thomas Kent was the only person who was not from Dublin, which was executed for her role during this Holy Week.
