Thomas Madsen-Mygdal

Thomas Madsen - Mygdal ( born December 24, 1876 in Mygdal, † February 23, 1943 in Copenhagen) was a Danish politician and Prime Minister ( Statsminister ).

Family and career

The son of a farmer and radical politician worked alongside his work as a farmer and as a teacher from 1908 to 1920 as president of the Agricultural College of Odense.

In 1920 he became chairman of the company founded back on his initiative Agriculture Council.

Political career

Chairman of the party Venstre

Madsen Myrgdal began his political career as a representative of the Social Liberal Party (Det Radical Venstre ), but switched after the First World War to the Liberal Party ( Venstre ).

From 1929 to 1941 he was chairman ( Partiformænd ) of the Venstre. Successor as chairman was Knud Kristensen.

Minister and Prime Minister from 1926 to 1929

On May 5, 1920 Prime Minister Niels Neergaard appointed him Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet. This office he held until the end of Neergaard term of office on 23 April 1924.

On December 14, 1926, he was after the defeat of the Social Democratic Party ( Socialdemokraterne ) in elections to parliament ( Folketing ) of King Christian X in place of Thorvald Stauning to the Prime Minister ( Statsminister ) appointed. At the same time he again took over the post of Minister of Agriculture.

On September 11, 1928, the University of Aarhus was established on private initiative under the name Universitetsundervisningen i Jylland ( Jutland in university education ) - the first university on the Danish mainland. Previously in Jutland had graduates only choice is to go to study in Copenhagen or across the border to Germany.

At first he was able to on the support of the Conservative People's Party (Det Conservative Folkeparti ) count.
