Thomas-Mann-Preis

The Thomas Mann Prize of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts is a literary prize was awarded in 2010 for the first time. He emerged from the Thomas Mann Prize of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and the Great Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.

History

1975 founded the Hanseatic city of Lübeck for the 100th birthday of Thomas Mann, a literary prize, were honored with the personalities, " who have distinguished themselves by their literary work in the spirit of humanity that characterized the work of Thomas Mann ." The Thomas Mann prize was awarded every three years, and was endowed with 10,000 euros. In 2008, the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts decided to rename its Grand Prize for Literature, the Thomas Mann Prize for Literature. The German Thomas Mann Society in Lübeck subsequently protested in an open letter to the designation of the Bavarian price. This would damage the reputation of the author and lead to irritation, as man had been driven from Munich 75 years ago.

In the summer of 2008 suggested an author of the cultural magazine Our ​​Luebeck with the support of editors to establish a common price. 2009 finally agreed that the German Thomas Mann Society and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts would be to confer together the price in the future. Under the new name Thomas Mann price of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts of the common literature prize is awarded annually since 2010, alternately in Lübeck and Munich, awarded. The prize is awarded for the life's work of an author or for outstanding contributions to the field of literary mediation and is endowed with 25,000 euros. The jury is made up of three representatives from Lübeck and Munich as well as a jointly appointed jury chairman.

First winner of the new prize was the author Christa Wolf. She was awarded on 24 October 2010 at the Theater Lübeck price.
