Thomas-Morse S4

The Thomas - Morse S-4 Scout was a single-seat training aircraft for fighter pilots from the year 1917.

Chief designer of the aircraft was B. D. Thomas, a former employee of Curtiss. 100 aircraft were ordered by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, which wanted to use it for teaching advanced pilots. These machines then carried the designation S -4B and were powered by a Gnome Monosoupape engine. In January 1918, a further 400 machines were ordered, which were driven by the weaker but more reliable Le Rhône -4C engine. This model then was called the S- 4C. Immediately after the First World War, the type was retired from the military again. The machines were sold in the civilian sector and where it is used among other things as racing aircraft.
