Thomas Onslow, 2nd Baron Onslow

Thomas Onslow, 2nd Baron Onslow ( * before November 27, 1679, † June 5, 1740 ) was an English nobleman and politician.

Life

Family and Title

Onslow was born as the first and only son of Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow and his wife Elisabeth Tulse. He had an older and a younger sister. He was baptized on 27 November 1679 at St. Margaret 's Church in the City of London. Under an agreement dated November 17, 1708 he married Elizabeth Knight, the daughter of a Jamaican businessman. Around 1730 he built for his family the Clandon House in Clandon Park. The title of Baron Onslow of Onslow, he took over his father's death in 1717. Career

His political career began in Onslow in 1702 as representative of the Whigs in the English Parliament. There he took up in 1705 after the interests of the constituency Gatton. He then took over to 1708 the representative of the constituency of Chichester. In the same year he took over briefly the seat for Haslemere. Between 1708 and 1715 he was a deputy for the district Bletchingley and took over from 1713 to 1714 also again the seat for Haslemere. In the period 1715-1717 he finally represented the constituency of Surrey. In addition to his service as a Member Onslow had also held a number of official posts. He was appointed in 1715 as Out - Ranger of Windsor Forest with the care of the Wilds in the Royal Park of Windsor. After his retirement from the Parliament him the University of Cambridge awarded doctoral degrees.
