Thomas Powys, 4th Baron Lilford

Thomas Lyttleton Powys, 4th Baron Lilford ( born March 18, 1833June 17, 1896 ) was a British aristocrat and ornithologist.

Powys was the eldest son of Thomas Powys, 3rd Baron Lilford and Mary Elizabeth Fox, daughter of Henry Vassall -Fox, 3rd Baron Holland. He inherited his father's death in 1861 near its title. 1858 Baron Lilford was one of the 20 founders of the British Ornithologists ' Union, of which he was president from 1867 until his death. He was also President of the Northamptonshire Natural History Society.

Baron Lilford traveled extensively, particularly in the Mediterranean. His extensive collection was administered to 1991 on his estate Lilford Hall. In his cage birds from around the world were put on display, including rheas, kiwis, the Pink-headed duck and even a pair of free-flying bearded vultures. He was responsible for the introduction of the little owl in England in the 1880s.

Baron Lilford wrote ornithological books such as Notes on the Birds of Northamptonshire and Neighbourhood (1895 ) and Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands, which was completed after his death by Osbert Salvin.

Powys was since 1859, first marriage to Emma Elizabeth Brandling, the daughter of Robert William Brandling. After her death in 1884 he married the following year, Clementina, daughter of Ker Baillie - Hamilton. He died in June 1896 at the age of 63 years. After his death, inherited by his eldest son John, who was from the first marriage, the peerage. Lady Clementina Lilford died 1929.

After Baron Lilford Tiertaxa are named as the Balearic lizard ( Podarcis lilfordi ), the Lilford Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos lilfordi ) and the Lilfordkranich (Grus grus lilfordi ).
