Thomas Seay

Thomas Seay ( born November 20, 1846 Greene County, Alabama, † March 30, 1896 in Greensboro, Alabama ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and the 27th Governor of Alabama.

Early years and political rise

Up to the age of twelve he attended the country schools. He was then sent for further training to Greensboro. He then went on to Southern University until the outbreak of the American Civil War. Seay committed itself in 1863 in the Confederate Army. He was captured and imprisoned on Ship Iceland. After the war Seay returned to the Southern University and graduated from there back in 1867. Later he studied law in Greensboro and in 1869 admitted to the bar. In the same year he became a junior partner of the firm Coleman and Seay and practiced so until 1885.

Seay decided in 1874 to enter propose a political career by unsuccessful candidate for the Senate from Alabama. In 1876 he was finally not chosen. He was always re-elected over the next ten years and was from 1884 to 1886 Chairman of the Senate. Furthermore, Seay was in the years 1880 and 1884 a delegate to the Democratic National Convention as well as vice president of the National Prison Association.

Governor of Alabama

On August 2, 1886 Seay was elected the 27th Governor of Alabama, and sworn in on 1 December 1886. Furthermore, he was re-elected on August 6, 1888 for a second term. During his terms of office, pensions for invalids Konföderiertenveteranen, and their widows, the first steel Alabama at Birmingham North were supported, the property tax was reduced, manufactured and opened the Savannah and Western Railroad in Birmingham. The State Normal School (now Troy University ), the State Normal School for Colored (now Alabama State ) founded in Montgomery, Alabama and the Academy were for the Blind in Talladega. It was 1897, the Farmers Alliance, founded in 1889, and the Alabama Farmers and Laborers Union of America. Seay left his office on December 1, 1890.

He ran for the U.S. Senate failed and returned to Greensboro, where he died at the age of 49 years on 30 March 1896. Seay was married twice and although Ellen SMAW, and with Clara de Lesdernier. The result of these compounds were six children.
