Thorium (IV ) carbide ( ThC ) is a salt of thorium in the oxidation state 4 with carbon, present as methanide ( C4 ). Due to the electronegativity of the elements of 1.25 on the Pauling scale, the bonds have roughly 30 % ionic character.
Production and representation
Thorium (IV) carbide can be obtained by the reaction of thorium with carbon.
Properties
Thorium (IV ) carbide is a dark gray metallic luster, crystalline substance which reacts with water and dilute acids to form hydrocarbons. He has a cubic crystal structure of the crystal structure of sodium chloride type with homogeneity region ( a = 5.29 to 5.36 Å) with space group Fm3m and a high melting point and is like all thorium compounds radioactive.
