Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay [ ˌ θʌndəɹ beɪ̯ ] is a town on Lake Superior (German: Upper Lake), in the province of Ontario with 108 359 inhabitants (conditions 2011) in an area of 328 km ². It lies at the Thunder Bay in the west of Lake Superior and is the second largest city in Northern Ontario. Thunder Bay is also the capital of the District in Ontario.

The city was created in 1970 by the merger of the cities Fort William, Port Arthur and the communities Neebing and McIntyre. The port of Thunder Bay is an important link for the shipment of grain and other products in Western Canada.

Economy and infrastructure

Economy

As the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, the city is the central hub for the surrounding smaller towns. In addition to the national health care, there are several authorities, and shopping areas in the city. Many of the largest employers in the city are the city, as well as public facilities, with the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, the Lakehead District School Board and the provincial government Government of Ontario. All three facilities employ approximately 1,500 employees, respectively. Among the largest employers in the private sector include Bowater Forest Products, AbitibiBowater and Buchanan Forest Products. Bombardier Transportation has a production plant for rail vehicles and rail infrastructure systems in the city.

Education

In Thunder Bay has 38 elementary schools, 3 middle, and 8 high schools. There are also two private education institutions as well as a school for adult education. Furthermore, there are two universities in the city, to which the Confederation College and Lakehead University.

Media

In Thunder Bay, The Chronicle - Journal, the largest daily newspaper in the city with a circulation of about 28,000. In addition, two weekly newspapers appear to which the Thunder Bay's Source, and the student newspaper, The Argus.

Thunder Bay is served by several television stations institutions. these include the major broadcasting networks like CTV, Global and CBC. The stations are fed into the cable from the cable operators Thunder Bay TV. Another cable operators Shaw Media. In addition, stations can be received from the neighboring Michigan.

Culture

Thunder Bay was awarded in 2003 the title of " Cultural Capital of Canada ". The entire city is characterized by the numerous cultures. So there is a Finnish Labour Temple, Scandinavia House, the, the Italian Cultural Centre, as well as the Polish Legion and other cultural institutions in Thunder Bay.

Traffic

Thunder Bay is connected by air, train and ship traffic. Greyhound Canada operates several long-distance bus services through Thunder Bay and thus connects the city with other cities. The urban transport system is operated by Thunder Bay Transit. Thunder Bay Transit operates 17 lines, connecting the surrounding cities of Thunder Bay.

The Thunder Bay International Airport is located nearby and offers several scheduled flights.

In Thunder Bay mainly only drive freight trains, the passenger rail service was discontinued in 1990. The freight trains are operated by Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway.

Thunder Bay has a harbor. The Port of Thunder Bay is the largest port on the St. Lawrence Seaway System and the sixth largest in Canada.

Sporting sweeps

On September 1, 1980, the Canadian national hero Terry Fox had to interrupt his "Marathon of Hope" (Marathon of Hope ) near Thunder Bay. He could not take it again and died a few months later in New Westminster near Vancouver.

In 1995, Thunder Bay hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships 1995.

The Junior Baseball World Cup 2010 is a full registered by the IBF competition, which will be held in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada from 23 July to 1 August 2010 in Port Arthur Stadium.
