Tichaona Jokonya

Tichaona Joseph Benjamin Jokonya (* December 27 1938 in Chikomba, † June 24, 2006 in Harare ) was a Zimbabwean diplomat and politician.

The doctor of political science taught from 1971 to 1977 at the University of Birmingham. Subsequently, he was a lecturer in modern British and European history at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare.

Dr. Jokonya was then since the independence of Zimbabwe in 1980 in responsible positions. First, he was Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation. From 1983 to 1988 he was Ambassador to Ethiopia. After his re- return to Zimbabwe, he was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Political Affairs, and two years later, in addition Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Later Dr. Jokonya was 1992-2002 Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. From 2003 to April 2005, he was Director General of the Tourism Authority.

Last time was Tichaona Jokonya from April 2005 until his death, Minister of Information and Publicity in the government of President Robert Mugabe. As such, he was concerned the tension created by his predecessor Jonathan Moyo to the press dismantle.
