Timbiras is a municipality in the state of Maranhão in Brazil.
Geography
Timbiras located in the northeast of Brazil in the center of the state of Maranhão. The Itapecuru flows through the city in a wide arc.
Climate
The climate is tropical. The rainy season begins in December and lasts until May, the dry season from July to November. The annual average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius.
Vegetation
The lush tropical vegetation is determined by various types of palm trees such as Babassu, TUCUM and carnauba palm.
History
The city had several names in the course of its history. The first settlement took place about 1830. At this time the place was called Vulture and Port of Vultures. In 1900, Franciscan and Capuchin settled on the territory of the town and called the place " Monte Alegre ". 1920, the municipality became independent in 1938 it became a city. 1943 got " Timbiras " its present name after a tribe that populated the region.
Population
2010 24,008 people lived in the city and surrounding area. The average income is about 70 € a month; approximately 65 % of all households in poverty (about 60 € a month) and are dependent on public support. The proportion of labor migration is very high: about 5,000 people to help in South Brazil in the sugar cane harvest.
The majority of the population is Catholic. There are also Protestant Free Churches and traditional cults.
