Bavin was born as the son of Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Sydney Durrance Bavin and his wife Marjorie Gwendoline Bavin, born Dew. His father served in the Royal Army Service Corps ( RASC ). Bavin attended St George 's School, Windsor Castle in Windsor near London and Brighton College ( 1949-1954 ).

He studied at Worcester College, Oxford University. Where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and a Master of Arts [ Master of Arts Oxbridge and Dublin, MA ( Oxon ) ] in the subject " Literae Humaniores " ( Greek and Roman history, Latin, Greek philosophy ) from. His military service rendered from the regiment of his father. From 1958 to 1959 Bavin served as Lieutenant in the Royal Army Service Corps. In 1958 he was promoted to command officer ( Commissioned Officer ) and was stationed as a platoon leader ( platoon officer ) in Aden.

To prepare for the priesthood, he attended Ripon Theological College, Cuddesdon near Oxford. In 1961 he was ordained a deacon; 1962 saw the ordination. His priestly career began from 1961 to 1964 as Curate ( Assistant Priest ) at the St Alban 's Cathedral in Pretoria in South Africa. From 1964 to 1969 he was Chaplain ( Chaplain ) at St. Alban 's College in Pretoria. In 1969 he returned to Britain. From 1969 to 1971 he was auxiliary vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in Uckfield in Sussex with responsibility for the parish in Little Horsted. From 1971 to 1973 he was pastor (Vicar ) at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Brighton.

1973 Bavin went again to South Africa. He was from 1973 to 1974 Dean and Pastor ( Rector ) at the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin in Johannesburg and Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of the Diocese of Johannesburg. In 1974 he was ordained a bishop. He was from 1974 to 1985 Bishop of Johannesburg; his successor in 1985, Desmond Tutu. In 1985 he was, succeeding Ronald Gordon, Bishop of Portsmouth in the Church of England. Bavin was a staunch opponent of women's ordination in the Church of England. After the General Synod of the Church of England had allowed the ordination of women in 1992, there was speculation Bavin will either convert to Catholicism or permit in his diocese no women as priests. In January 1995, Bavin but stated that he had reconsidered its position once again: the ordination of women could, as in the Church of England, also give the Roman Catholic Church impetus.

Bavin was in his time as Bishop of Portsmouth at the few unmarried church leaders in the Church of England; was stressed by representatives of the lesbian and gay movement and militant pressure groups repeatedly and publicly. In November 1994, Bavin was outed by the British human rights activist Peter Tatchell as homosexual. In 1995, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Portsmouth was Kenneth Stevenson.

After his retirement as Bishop Bavin appeared as a monk in the Benedictine monastery of Alton Abbey in Beech, near Alton in Hampshire. Bavin said his decision for a monastic life had nothing to do with his outing. He wanted to return to his original retirement to South Africa, but then have the vocation for a religious life felt in himself. In September 1995 he appeared as a postulant in the Congregation. Meanwhile he is there Oblate. He was appointed auxiliary bishop volunteers ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the diocese of Winchester in 1996. Since 2012 he is a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Bavin 1987 became a member of the Anglican Congregation Oratory of the Good Shepherd. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music. His hobbies include music, theater, gardening and walking.
