Timothy Sullivan (composer)

Timothy Richard Sullivan ( born December 16, 1954 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian composer and music educator.

Sullivan studied composition with Samuel Dolin and studied at the University of Toronto with Walter Buczynski and John Beckwith. From 1979 to 1989 he taught at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, where he was director of the composition program from 1985 to 1989. In 1986, he founded the Contemporary Music Ensemble. 1989-90 he was a visiting professor at the University of Victoria, after which he served as Composer-in- Residence at the Canadian Opera Company and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. In 2001 he was keynote speaker at the Asia Pacific Orchestra 's Conference in Australia.

After chamber works Sullivan became known in the late 1980s with several operas: Tomorrow and Tomorrow ( according to its own libretto, UA, 1986 in New York) and Dream Play ( after August Strindberg's drama ) and Florence ( libretto by Anne McPherson, UA 1992). In the 1990s he worked with Canadian dance and ballet choreographers such as William Douglas, Lee Eisler, Claudia Moore and John Alleyne and Indian choreographers like Menaka Thakkar, Chandralehka, Lata Pada and Hari Krishnan. In 2003 he published the book with Lee Willingham Creativity and Music Education.
