Tin Can API

The Tin Can API, officially Experience API ( XAPI ), is an e -learning software specification that allows that learning content and Learning Systems (LMS ) can exchange information in order to accommodate a variety of learning experiences. Learning experiences are recorded in a Learning Record Store (LRS ). LRSs can be integrated into existing or traditional Learning Management Systems ( LMSs ) or are self-

Summary

The Tin Can API is often called " The Experience API " and " Next Generation SCORM ". SCORM ( Sharable Content Object Reference Model ) the de facto standard e-learning to e -learning content in LMSs was to deliver or exchange between LMSs. However, there were significant limitations.

The Tin Can API offers a range of new possibilities that had not SCORM:

  • E -learning outside of web browsers
  • E -learning in mobile applications
  • A greater control over e -learning content
  • Increased security via Oauth
  • ( Begin e-learning on a mobile device and finish on a PC) exchange between platforms
  • The possibility of learning experience within games and simulations to capture
  • The possibility of learning experience or achievements to be recognized in everyday life
  • Team -based e-learning
  • Tracking learning plan and goals

The Tin Can API is an open- source API. The API is uses a follow the principles of Representational State Transfer (REST) architecture designed Web Service, of the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data format. The web service allows software clients to write such as web browsers or smart phone applications, data of learning experiences in a LRS system or read from this out: in the simplest form as " I did this " or generalized as " authorship object ". However, it is also far more complex learning experiences are exchanged.

History

SCORM is over 10 years old and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL ), the controlling body of SCORM, recognized the need for a newer and more versatile software specification.

ADL Broad Agency Announcement brought a ( BAA, which is considered as the default for Research Proposals for American authorities ) out to support the improvement of SCORM. The research award received Rustici Software that are by the Scorm activities already one of the leading software companies of data exchange in the e -learning market. Rustici software then led through a variety of surveys of participants and organizations in e-learning to determine which are the most important factors to be improved and to develop a first specification as a research base. This research project was called Project Tin Can.

The Tin Can API is still in development after version 1.0.0. There are well over 50 companies, particularly the large LMS providers who apply these specifications (3 May 2013).

Current Version

The Tin Can API is currently at version 1.0.1.
