Tindari

Tindari is a part (fraction ) of the municipality of Patti, in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily. Here are excavations of the ancient city Tyndaris and a pilgrimage church.

Location and data

Tindari is located in the municipality of Patti. It is in mount Tindari on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

History

Tyndaris was founded in 396 BC by Dionysius I of Syracuse. During the Punic Wars, the city has allied with the Romans. In the 1st century part of the city disappeared into the sea, land was an earthquake.

In ancient Tindari was a bishopric, on today's titular Tyndaris goes back.

The city was destroyed by the Arabs in 836. 1094 was the present settlement. During the Sicilian Vespers, the city of Frederick II was destroyed. The city was rebuilt and destroyed again by pirates.

Attractions

Sanctuary of the Black Madonna

In built in the 1950s, Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of the Black Madonna of Tindari is worshiped.

The miraculous image of Santuario was, according to tradition in the 8/9 Century from Constantinople Opel, where iconoclasm was kindled, to Sicily.

According to legend, the statue was washed ashore in a box. The statue bears the inscription SUM SED FORMOSA Nigra ( German: "I am black but beautiful "). To the feast of the birth on September 8, the image will be festively decorated.

The pilgrimage church was built around a smaller, older church. They can be visited to this day. There is also the black Madonna.

From the square in front of the Sanctuary you can see the natural spectacle of the mare secco, a long drawn-out, rising from the sea sand bank. In addition, you have a far -reaching views of the Rock of Tindari, the hinterland of Milazzo and up to the Aeolian Islands.

Antique Tyndaris

Excavations were begun in 1812. Since then, a part of the ancient Tyndaris has been exposed. Under the Sanctuary no excavations took place.

  • Antiquarium
  • A Greek theater

Legend of the Black Madonna

As a popular explanation for the phenomenon of the mare secco People tell the following legend: A small child fell from the mountain into the water. The mother, a pilgrim, pray in their distress to the Holy Mother of God. Then rose up out of the sea one hand and the child was rescued.

The shape of the sandbar in the lagoon of Tindari can be used as an extended arm of the island interpreted with hand.
