Tipperary ( Irish: Tiobraid Árann; "source of Ara " ) is a town with 4,322 inhabitants ( as of 2011) in the south of Ireland, in the west of the county of the same name.

Tipperary was known by the song " It's a Long Way to Tipperary " world.

History

The foundation of the city dates back to the 12th century; the Augustinian monastery of the city was founded in the 13th century. Tipperary has a long tradition as a market town and still owns a sprawling shopping street with many shops.

Traffic

The town lies on the N24 from Waterford to Limerick; The N74 connects with Cashel, a regional road to Charleville on the N20.

From 1848 opened train station for trains to Waterford and Limerick.

Tipperary Peace Prize

The fame of "It's A Long Way to Tipperary " has rubbed off on the city. But in order to be no longer primarily associated with war, the city has established a Peace Congress in 1983. He forgives every year since 1984 the Tipperary Peace Prize and selects the Tipperary Song of Peace.

Past winners include the pop musician Bob Geldof, former Irish President Mary McAleese, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former South African President Nelson Mandela or the Cluster Munition Coalition, a global alliance against cluster munitions.

Twinning

Mautern in Styria and Parthenay in the French region of Poitou -Charentes are twin cities of Tipperary. Consist friendly connections with wine town in Baden- Württemberg.
