Tirant lo Blanch

Tirant lo Blanc ( Catalan " Tirant the White ( Ritter) " ), written by Joanot Martorell, is a 1490 in Valencia published, standing in the tradition of courtly romance novel of chivalry in altkatalanischer language and is due to its unusually sharp realism as a cornerstone in the history of the modern novel. The novel was re-published in Barcelona in 1497.

Action

The plot tells of a Breton knight named Tirant with the epithet " the white knight ", the many adventures is in Europe until the Eastern Roman Emperor asks him to help in the war against the Turks. Tirant accepts the order and saves the Eastern Roman Empire from the Turks. After that he is some more adventures in the Mediterranean, but dies before he can marry the most beautiful woman in the kingdom.

Some trains Tirants show certain similarities to Roger de Flor, leader of the Almogàvers who helped to fight the Turks, and was murdered by the Byzantines.

Effect

Tirant lo Blanc is regarded as one of the most important books of Catalan literature and has been repeatedly described as one of the best ever books ever written. The novel is the main source of influence for Miguel de Cervantes ' Don Quixote de la Mancha, published a century later. Cervantes called Tirant lo Blanc as "the best book in the world " and as "a treasure of satisfaction and a mine to pass the time ."

In the 16th century the novel through several editions, was then, however, largely forgotten by the reading public. In the late 20th century, the novel experienced a renaissance ( the literary scholar Damaso Alonso named him even " the best European novel of the 15th century " ) and has been available in several editions and translations.

2006, the novel was filmed in Spain. In September 2007, first published in a German edition entitled The novel from the White Knight Tirant lo Blanc. His interpreter, Fritz Vogelgsang was honored for his decades- long work of translation of the novel in March 2008 with the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair in the category translation.
