Titan beetle

The giant longhorn beetle ( Titanus giganteus) is a representative of longhorn beetle ( Cerambycidae ) from the tropical rainforests of South America.

It is next to the Hercules Beetle with a maximum of 17 centimeters body length to the largest beetle in the world. There are reports that even specimens have been seen with a body length of twenty centimeters. Head and thorax have a black -brown color. The elytra are front so dark at the base, but are much brighter toward the rear end. Remarkable are also the powerful mandibles and for longhorn beetles unusually short sensor.

Carl von Linne did not describe the bug 1771 ( Cerambyx giganteus ) to living material, but only based on a drawing by the French naturalist Louis Jean -Marie Daubenton. It is the only kind of so monotypic genus Titanus ..

About the beetle is not enough awareness. Its circulation area covers the tropical northern South America, the Amazon Basin, including Peru and Colombia, the Guyanas, detected in Brazil in Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Mato Grosso. Adult beetles are observed from December to March. Males be attracted by light traps.
