Tiv

The Tiv language (including second language speakers ) of over 6 million people spoken mainly in Nigeria and in some cases also in Cameroon.

As a mother language is the language spoken by the people of the Tiv. Most Nigerian speakers of the language are located in Benue State. The language is also spoken in the Nigerian states Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa and of migrants in Abuja. It is part of tivoiden languages ​​within the Southern bantoiden languages.

Tiv has twelve noun classes that are marked by prefixes and suffixes, four of which are purely tonal. Tiv therefore, like most Bantu languages, a tonal language.

The linguistic study of the Tiv began in 1854, when the Anglican Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther chronicled a word list of the Tiv. Appeared in 1932 in Lagos, the first Tiv - English dictionary. The Briton Roy Clive Abraham published in 1933 a Tiv grammar, also in 1940 a dictionary and a comprehensive study in four volumes. The Bible was translated in the 1960s in Tiv.
