Tjøme

Tjøme is the name of an island and island municipality in the Norwegian Vestfold. The municipality is bordered to the west by Sandefjord, on the north by Nøtterøy and the east and south of the Oslo Fjord.

Tjøme consists of the elongated island Tjøme (12 km long, 24.5 km ²) to the north, Brøtsø (or Brøtsøy ) ( 1.9 km ²) and Hvasser (3.6 km ²) in the southeast. The islands have bridges connecting each other. In addition to the commune include 475 smaller or larger islands or bars without year-round habitation, such as the islands Sandø (or Sandøy ) ( 1.1 km ² ), and the holiday camp hudo (or Hui ). On the south are the Tristein Islands ( Tristein - øyene ) with the beacon Færder fyr, which is regarded as the southernmost terminus of the Oslo Fjord. The southern tip of the island Tjøme, a popular tourist destination, is called Verdens Ende, which means " end of the world " in German.

The name probably comes from the municipality norrønen " Tjúma " of the " taumr " ( rope, cable ) can be derived. The name may be related to the elongated shape of the island.
