Tjörn

Tjörn is an island off the west coast of Sweden in the historic province of Bohuslän and the County of Västra Götaland County. She is with her 167.3 km ² the sixth largest island in Sweden. Geography

The Tjörnbron leads from the east side of the island to Stenungsund and connects Tjörn with the mainland. The largest town on the island is called Skärhamn and is also the headquarters of the municipality. About the Skåpesundbron from the neighboring island Orust in the north of the island to reach. Other towns on Tjörn are Rönnäng, Klädesholmen and Kyrkesund.

The industry has been shaped over many decades of fishing and boat building. The largest employers on Tjörn are still the shipping company Transatlantic (formerly B & N) and the shipyards Djupviks varv and Rönnängs varv.

Tourism

During the summer months the population increases Tjörns by the many tourists to around 30,000 people. Skärhamn has a guest harbor, to create the many travelers who explore the west coast of Sweden. Also located in Skärhamn since 2000 the Nordic Watercolour Museum ( Akvarellmuseet ).

Popular destinations are the neighboring islands Härön and Åstol and the 8000 years old grave field in Hällene, in which you will find the earliest evidence of the runes can be found.

In the third week of August Regatta " Tjörn runt " takes place - with about 1300 participating private boats one of the largest sailing races in the world, which leads 28 nautical miles around the island and many annually attracts onlookers.

On the first weekend in September is the Tjörn Triathlon 11.3 instead - a competition over half the Ironman distance, who is also the Swedish championship over this distance.
