Tobias Furneaux

Tobias Furneaux ( born August 17, 1735 in Swilly, a district of Plymouth, England; † September 19, 1781 ) was a British explorer. He was the first man to sail around the world in both directions.

Life

Very early Furneaux joined the Royal Navy, and embarked on a career as an officer. Between 1760 and 1763 he served in the Seven Years' War in the West Indies. Between 1768 and 1769 he took part in as Second Lieutenant Samuel Wallis circumnavigation, was discovered in Tahiti, among others.

Furneaux in 1771 was promoted to Commander. When Captain James Cook's support ship Adventure, he accompanied him on his second expedition to the South Pacific. When he was separated from 8 February to 19 May 1773 by Cook, explored and he charted the waters in the North East of Tasmania. Therefore, the Furneaux Group today bears his name. On October 22, 1773 Furneaux lost again, and this time for good, in contact with Cook and eventually drove alone back to England.

Furneaux took part in the American Revolutionary War and was promoted to captain in 1775. On June 28, 1776, he commanded the Syren in their attack on Charleston in South Carolina.
