Tokaj

Tokaj [ tokɒj ] ( German: Tokey ) is an ancient city in north-eastern Hungary Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén, 53 kilometers from county capital Miskolc. The city is the center of the Hungarian part of the Tokaj wine region, where the famous Tokaji is grown.

History

The now called as Rákóczi Castle in Tokaj strengthening system was first by the notary of King Béla III. (1172-1196) as " Hymesudoar " or Hímesudvar ( court of Himes ) described. This notary was also the famous Hungarian writer of his time, who called himself Anonymous.

The city was first mentioned in 1353. Not later than the 14th century, an stone castle, which belonged to the manor Diósgyor.

After 1450 was Tokaj property of the Hunyadi family, so that with the accession to the throne, Matthias Corvinus ' the city became royal property. 1705 Francis II Rákóczi ordered to demolish the castle.

In the 20th century, the city lost its importance and the status of a city. Their role in the wine trade was taken over by the city Sátoraljaújhely. In 1986 the church was again declared a city.

Characteristics

Today, Tokaj is a top tourist attraction. The city is the center of the Tokaj region. Despite the small population, it is an important transportation hub, two large bridges cross the Tisza, the railway bridge and the road bridge ( Bridge of the Queen Elisabeth ). The settlement consists of two parts: The Old Town is situated on the Bodrog ( it is " the City" ), " Small Tokaj " is slightly larger than the old city and is located on the Tisza. Tokaj can be called a school town, as there is next to an elementary school three middle schools: the Tokaji Ferenc Gymnasium ( Secondary School of Education, Environmental Protection and Management), the High School of Trade and Tourism and the Vocational School of Agriculture.

Attractions

On the main square is a Roman Catholic church built in 1912 is a carillon. In the middle of the main square stands the statue of István I. is the saint, which was erected in memory of the Hungarian Millennium. Right on the main square is also the Tokaj Museum, which was built by a Greek merchant family in the 17th century. The Tokaj gallery is located in the old Greek Orthodox church here various cultural programs ( concerts, exhibitions ) are organized. The Greek Catholic Church, the oldest church in Tokaj, is equipped with a remarkable iconostasis. The building of the school was built in 1996 and is architecturally inspired by the historic Tokaj castle. The Rákóczi cellar, the largest in Tokaj wine region, has a total length of 1.5 km, 20,000 liters of wine can be stored here. Against this wine cellar is the statue of Bacchus, which has received the city of the twin city Oestrich angle. In the near Tokaj is a transmission tower of the Hungarian Radio, which is designed as one of the few radio towers as a hybrid tower.

Tokaj grape varieties

In the wine region Tokaj three grape varieties are grown: Furmint, Muscat ( Sárgamuskotály ) and Linden ( HÁRSLEVELŰ ). For these varieties different sweet, semi- sweet, dry and semi-dry wines are produced. The Vintage Festival, the festival week, the festive procession and the related cultural programs that are organized every year in October, as well as the Wine Festival in August attract many visitors and tourists.
