Tomasz Merta

Tomasz Merta ( born November 7, 1965 in Legnica, † 10 April 2010 Smolensk, Russia) was a Polish civil servant, historian, publicist, in the years 2005-2010 Vice Minister, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and conservation authorities ( Generalny Konserwator Zabytków ).

Life

Merta finished his studies at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw, after postgraduate studies at the School of Social Sciences at the Institute of Philology and Sociology at the Polish Academy of Sciences ( Polska Akademia Nauk ) and PhD at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw.

From 1996 to 1998 he worked as an assistant at the Institute for Applied Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw. From 1996 to 1999 he formed an editorial team for the journal Res Publica Nowa. From 1996 to 2000 he was a Polish correspondent for the East European Constitutional Review, then he had to 2002 held the position as chief editor of the quarterly journal Kwartalnik Konserwatywny.

From 2000 to 2001 he was an advisor to Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. From 2001 to 2002 he was Director of the Institute for National Heritage.

He was one of the cultural sector to the co-authors of the party program of Law and Justice ( Prawo i Sprawiedliwość ). He had a seat in the Council of the 4th Republic of Poland ( Rzeczpospolita IV ) and the Programme Council of the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising. In 2005 he was appointed honorary committee for the support of Lech Kaczyński in the Presidential elections in Poland in 2005.

He was connected with the Krakow center for political ideas ( Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej ) that belongs to the Club of Friends and Sponsors (Club Przyjaciół i Sponsorów OMP). He co-authored and assisting editor of publishing the book to protect the common sense (W obronie zdrowego rozsądku ) from the year 2000, and the book Remembrance and Responsibility ( Pamięć i odpowiedzialność ) from the year 2005. He also published, among others, in the monthly Znak, in the daily Życie, in the journal Rzeczpospolita, in the newspapers Gazeta Wyborcza, Przegląd Polityczny, in the monthlies Wiez, Newsweek Polska and weekly ozone. He was content, consultants in the education center for citizens ( Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej ), co-author of the curriculum and textbook on knowledge about society, history and entrepreneurship ( Wiedza o społeczeństwie, historii i Przedsiębiorczości ) and methodological guide for teachers.

On 4 November 2005, he was appointed Vice Minister, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the conservation authorities ( Generalny konserwator zabytków ).

On April 10, 2010 Merta belonged to a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński, who was to travel on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre to the memorial to Russia. However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the military airfield Smolensk - North he came together with other high-ranking representatives of Poland died.

Posthumously Merta was awarded on 16 April 2010 the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta ( Krzyż Komandorski z Gwiazda Orderu Odrodzenia Polski ).
