Tomaszów Mazowiecki

Geography

Geographical Location

The city is located 110 km south of Warsaw and 55 km south-east of Łódź. It lies on the E 67, which connects Warsaw with Prague.

History

A settlement on the site of the present Tomaszów was founded in 1788 by Count Tomasz Ostrowski, when iron ore was found here. In his palace now the municipal museum is housed. 1789, the settlement was called Kuźnice Tomaszowskie. In 1824, the city 's status as a trading and industrial settlement. The city was chartered the place on 6 July 1830 with a Tomaszów. The connection to the rail network was 1885. The place was one of the most important textile production sites in addition to Łódź.

Before the First World War, there lived 40,000 people. One of the landmarks of the city is the Redeemer Church, which was consecrated in 1903 as the Evangelical Lutheran church and was primarily used by the 3000 German -born residents Tomaszóws and the surrounding environs.

Tomaszów until the First World War was a part of Russian Poland. After the re- establishment of a Polish state in 1919, the city was the seat of a Powiats.

During the German occupation, a ghetto was established in the city in May 1940. The Red Army reached Tomaszów on 18 January 1945.

Education

Part of the University of Łódź is located in the city. In the city there is also the well-known dance school Cantinero, which can look back on a number of successes at national level ( Polish Championships ).
