The island now connected to the Kaloum peninsula came under French rule by a treaty with King Dubréka on 20 January 1880. Purchase of the island should limit the influence of the British Empire in the region. 1885 also made the German Reich claims to the island strategically located contends, however, refrained from Tombo in exchange for an area on the border of Togo and the Kingdom of Dahomey. The island was officially French territory on June 8, 1889.
