Tommy Söderström

Tommy Söderström ( born July 17, 1969 in Stockholm ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League, among others, for the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders in its active period from 1987 to 2000.

Career

Tommy Soderstrom began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior department of Djurgårdens IF, at the first team he first time during the 1987/88 season in the Elitserien stood in the squad, but so far had no use. He spent the following season in the Nacka HK in the then still second-class Division 1 Then the goalkeeper returned to Djurgårdens IF back, with whom he won the Swedish championship titles respectively in the seasons 1989/90 and 1990/91. From 1992 to 1994 Soderstrom played for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, who had chosen him already in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the eleventh round when a total of 214 players. During his time with the Flyers, he played in 16 games in parallel for their farm team in Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. On September 22, 1994, he was transferred Islanders in exchange for Ron Hextall and a sixth- round option for the NHL Entry Draft in 1995 to New York, where he spent the next three NHL seasons. During his time with the Islanders, he stood parallel in some games with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League and the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League between the posts. Most recently, he played from 1997 to 2010 again for his tribe Djurgårdens IF, with whom he was runner-up in 98 of the 1997 season /. During the season, he pointed to the lowest Gegentorschnitt the league and the best fishing quota. In addition, he was awarded the Guldhjälmen as Elitserien Player of the Year. After winning the league title in the 1999/2000 season he ended the long-standing national team at the age of 31 years of his career.

Internationally

For Sweden Söderström took part in the junior level at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1987 and the U20 World Youth Championship in 1989. In the U18 European Championship in 1987, he won with his team the gold at the 1989 World Championships silver medal. Especially with the U18 European Championship he was able to convince when he was both the best goalkeeper of the tournament as well as selected in the All-Star team.

In the senior level, he stood in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993 and at the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville in 1992 and 1998 in Nagano. At the World Championships in 1991 and 1992, he won with his team the gold medal in each case and at the 1993 World Championships silver medal. He also reiterated in the 1992 World Cup on the lowest Gegentorschnitt and was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. In addition, he represented Sweden in 1991 at the Canada Cup in 1996 and the World Cup of Hockey.
