Tone sandhi

Under Tonsandhi refers to rules that affect the pronunciation of different tones in tonal languages. The word comes from the Sanskrit Sandhi and is called together.

So there are in Mandarin Chinese, for example, a rule that in two consecutive syllables in the third tone, the first of the two syllables is pronounced in the second tone. The common greeting " nǐhǎo " ( nǐ (你) "You " hǎo (好) "good" ) is then pronounced as " níhǎo " ( diacritics mark the clay, see Pinyin).
