Tongji University (Chinese同济大学/同济大学, Pinyin Tongji Daxue ) is a university in the People's Republic of China. The focal University, she is subordinate to the Chinese Ministry of Education directly and is one of the 33 universities that will be built to world-renowned universities after the state educational program " 985 ".

History of establishment

The forerunner of Tongji University was the " German School of Medicine for Chinese in Shanghai ". It was founded in 1907 by the German government as the first big project of foreign cultural policy. For this, in particular the German Consul General in Shanghai, William Squire, and the Assistant Secretary in the Prussian Ministry of Culture, Friedrich Althoff dedicated. They worked there together with the German doctors Erich Paulun, Academy of scraping and Paul Krieg, the one built on the initiative Pauluns hospital for Chinese, the Tung Chee Hospital ( Tongji Hospital) operated in Shanghai. This was in October 1909 as a teaching hospital, but was performed independently of the medical school. 1912 joined the German Government of the medical school at the " German engineering school for Chinese in Shanghai " with a training workshop. She was supported to a much greater extent than during the medical school of German companies that were interested in the Chinese market, including Krupp, Thyssen, Siemens, Bayer, BASF and German bank there. A language school prepared the Chinese students for the German-language studies. 1917 was closed " German medicine and engineering school for Chinese in Shanghai" by the French colonial power. However, it was provisionally continued with Chinese assistance in other buildings and, after the Chinese government had recognized in 1923 as a university, opened in 1924 as Chinese Tongji University again. Their technical equipment donated again the German industry and German lecturers from other members continue their lessons in German. This lays the foundations for a German -Chinese cooperation at that time were created, which is today kept at Tongji University. For this, a Chinese-German School for Postgraduate Studies was established in 1998 to set a prime example of knowledge exchange between China and Germany.

University

The total number of training and Fortzubildenden is approximately 54,000. It should 22,000 Bachelor, Master 11,000 and 3,000 doctors are. At the University of over 4,800 faculty and research staff are currently working, including 2,400 ordinary or associate professors. Of them go 300 doctoral supervisors and 13 members respectively of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering Sciences forth.

As one of the most important research centers in the country Tongji University also has 15 state research institutions with focus laboratories on national, provincial and ministerial level as well as research institutes of Engineering. In addition to the University four hospitals and three middle schools are affiliated.

The former rector of Tongji University Wan Gang was appointed on April 27, 2007 Science Minister of the People's Republic of China.

Summer Academies

Tongji University offers ( sometimes with partner universities ) various summer academies to:

  • Under the title of Shanghai -Hessen International Summer Courses presented from 3 to September 28, 2007 Hessian universities and professors of Tongji University together a compact program on the issues of development & architecture and business before.
  • Since 1979, a partnership between the Ruhr- University Bochum and Tongji University, concluded in the framework of which a 2002 agreement for a summer school program. Here the student is made possible following the second semester in an intensive eight-week language course.
