Tony Sarg

Tony Sarg (* April 21, 1880 in Coban, Guatemala, † February 17, 1942; actually Anthony Frederick Coffin ) was a German -American puppeteer and illustrator. He was also known as the American master of the puppets and the father of modern puppetry.

Coffin was born as a son of the German consul Franz Karl coffin and the English Marz Elizabeth Parker in Guatemala. 1887 the family moved to Germany, and coffin entered into a military academy with 14 years. At 17, promoted to lieutenant, he gave in 1905 to the military career and moved to England, where he chatted with the American Bertha Eleanor McGowan, whom he had met as a tourist in Germany a relationship. After the wedding on January 20, 1909 in Cincinnati, the couple returned to England, where two years later, their daughter Mary was born. At the outbreak of the First World War, first in Cincinnati, in 1915, the family settled in New York City; 1921 took the coffin to the American citizenship.

Coffin, who had grown up with dolls and the grandmotherly doll collection had inherited, occupied his leisure increasingly with this hobby. In 1917 he started his own business as a puppeteer. In addition, he was known for his humorous illustrations in magazines, especially in the Saturday Evening Post. He wrote and illustrated children's books, created his own puppet theater and created mechanical toy.

1928 designed coffin for Macy 's Department Store, a well-known department store in New York, up to 40 m long, helium-filled balloons that had similarity with animals and were used for the Thanksgiving parade the department store. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas 1935 designed coffin, also for Macy's, an elaborate, animated showcase design with dolls.

At the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1933, was involved in the coffin, he reached the peak of his career and an audience of 3 million people. With the increasingly competitive Dolls studios coffin but could not keep up and he was forced to declare bankruptcy.

In mid-February 1942, coffin, which had illustrated the book Speaking of Operations, surgery for a ruptured appendix and died three weeks later consequences of surgery.
