TOPIX

TOPIX represents Tōkyō Stock Price Index (Japanese东 证 株 価 指数, Tōshō kabuka Shisu ) and is adjacent to the Nikkei 225 a price index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

TOPIX is calculated since 1988. It contains all Japanese shares are admitted for official trading. The weighting of each company in the index is based on the market capitalization. Currently (July 25, 2010) where the index is composed of 1672 shares. Because of this high number of companies represented the Topix is considered meaningful for the state of the Japanese economy than the Nikkei.
