Torfi Bryngeirsson

Torfi Bryngeirsson ( born November 11, 1926 in Búastaðar, Vestmannaeyjar, † July 15, 1995 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic athlete. At a height of 1.78 m his competition weight was 72 kg.

Twice Torfi Bryngeirsson took part in the Olympic Games. In London in 1948, he failed in the pole vault in qualifying. In Helsinki in 1952, he finished with skipped 3.95 meters Rank 14th

At the European Championships in Brussels in 1950 and 1954 in Bern, he failed to qualify for the finals in the pole vault, respectively, but both times went to the finals not to.

The Icelandic pole vault record, he increased in 1952 to 4.35 meters. Also a national record he set in 1950 on the long jump. He qualified namely at the European Championships for the finals in the long jump. In the final he jumped 7.32 meters national record. With this jump, he became European Champion in front of the Dutchman Gerard Wessels with 7.22 meters.

Icelandic athletes won a total of three titles at the European Championships next Torfi Bryngeirsson was the putter Gunnar Huseby, who won in 1946 and 1950, the only European champions.
