Gladly we would have played in the CNE Coliseum, which took about 10,000 spectators, but the owner of Bill Ballard, son of Harold Ballard, who was both the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Maple Leaf Gardens, knew this to be prevented. The team played in the first season at the Varsity Arena, which offered only 4,860 spectators. An average attendance of 4,291 showed that the stadium was too small. The star of the team was in the first year Wayne Carleton, who had come with the Nationals to Toronto.

In the season 1974/75 the team moved to the Maple Leaf Gardens and increased its average attendance there to a remarkable 10,436. This was ensured also spectacular signings as that of the Czechoslovaks Václav Nedomansky, Paul Henderson, the hero of the Summit Series in 1972, and especially of Frank Mahovlich, a former star of the Maple Leafs. The team reached the playoffs, but failed there to the San Diego Mariners in the first round. Although the stars were all held, was a disastrous 1975/76 season in which one was the weakest team in the league with only 53 points. Even the Minnesota Fighting Saints, who stopped the operation of gambling game 22 days left in the season, had collected more points significantly. The February, where you fought out seven of the twelve games on home ice, brought eleven defeats. The average attendance had fallen to 8,983. John F. Bassett pulled the ripcord and moved his team to Birmingham in Alabama, where it played with consistent logo and jerseys as the Birmingham Bulls.
