Toshio Mashima

Toshio Mashima (Japanese真 岛 俊 夫Toshio Mashima; * 1949 in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, on the main island of Honshū, Japan ) is a contemporary Japanese composer.

Biography

First, he studied engineering. This study he interrupted to study music. He completed his studies at the Kanagawa University and took there the Yamaha Band Director through major course on technology. He also studied composition and arrangement at Bin Kaneda and jazz theory at Makoto Uchibori. He graduated in 1971 and played after studying trumpet in jazz and pop bands. He then worked as an assistant to Naohiro Iwai and sat down but reinforced with the compositions for band apart.

His own works, in particular for wind band, are sold through publishers in Europe and the United States of America and thus performed all over the world by orchestras. Lately, he has also composed for TV series and movies. He is currently working as an instructor of Sobi Institute of Education, and as specialty instructor of Yamaha Music School.

He won the 7th. Academy Award in the composition section of the Academic Society of Japan for Winds and Percussion bands.
