History

Already in the 1980s, the EPFL professor Julius Natterer has given his students the assignment to develop various construction designs. With a motion and an interpellation in the years 1994 and 1996, the city council Pierre Payot proposed to build the lookout tower on existing reservoir, so no trees have to be felled. The project was approved by City Council on July 2, 1996. The Baubewillung was the builder, the Union des sociétés de développement de Lausanne ( USDL ) pronounced on 12 March 1998.

The financing of the approximately 1.19 million francs construction costs was largely taken over by sponsors. With the purchase of stairs kicks everyone was able to contribute financially; for individuals cost a 1,000 francs, 3,000 francs for businesses. For each landing is provided with a Plaque of the patron.

The tower was completed on 29 November 2003 and is freely accessible to the public since December 15, 2003. Access is controlled automatically by a hinged gate and closes in bad weather, and after the opening times. The maximum number of persons is limited for security reasons 50.

Architecture

The architect of the building is Bernard Bolli from the city's architecture office. The tower is 35.20 meters high and about 130 tons. Two staircases lead spiral upward respectively downward. Each staircase has 151 steps kicks. The diameter at the base is twelve meters, the observation deck eight meters. As building material exclusively solid wood was used from the urban forest. There about 141 cubic meters of the variety douglas fir 73 cubic meters and 8 cubic meters of larch have been processed.
