Trachyandra

Trachyandra ciliata

Trachyandra is a plant genus of the subfamily Asphodelus ( Asphodeloideae ). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words for trachys, rough 'as well as for andros ' man' and refers to the rough stamen of the species. Focus for disseminating the winter rain areas of Kapgebietes in South Africa. Most species are geophytische succulents.

Description

Vegetative characteristics

The species of the genus Trachyandra are variable, perennial, hairless to drüsenfilzige rosette plants. You are blattsukkulent, stemless and geophytisch or grow bushy and reach a height of up to 2 meters. The rhizome is formed bulbous or as upright rhizomes. The spindle-shaped or fibrous roots are terete. The upright stem is woody and covered with leaf bases. The leaves are two polymorphic or all the same. Your leaf blade is flat or triangular to terete, often linear - band-shaped and rarely längsfurchig, straight or wavy.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence is racemose or paniculate occasionally. The flower stem is covered with bracts. The individual flowers are spread to hanging. The wheel-shaped perianth is often bent back later. The six white to mauve tepals arranged in two rows. The outer tepals are narrower than the inner tepals. The six stamens are fused with the Perigonbasis. Their stamens are rough, the anthers dorsifix and intrors. The spherical, Upper constant ovary is dreifächrig. The stylus is terete and the stigma capitate.

Fruit and seeds

The fruits are spherical lokulizide capsule fruits. They contain gray-brown, smooth to warty seeds that are sticky.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Trachyandra is widespread in Africa and there mostly in the southwest of South Africa.

The first description of the genus Trachyandra in 1843 by Carl Sigismund Kunth. The type species of the genus is Trachyandra hispida. After Anna Amelia Obermeyer, the genus is divided into three sections:

  • Glandulifera Oberm.
  • Liriothamnus ( Schltr. ) Oberm.
