History

In the 19th century the then fast-growing German Elbing needed a modern public transport, so the magistrate decided in 1895 to build the first two tram lines that should connect the residential areas with the center, the train stations and the emerging industrial enterprises. In the following years the tram network is systematically extended. The Elbląg tram chose the unusual for today's Poland meter gauge. It can be found now only in the tram Bydgoszcz, Łódź, Toruń and Grudziądz.

At the end of the Second World War, the Polish authorities have decided to rebuild the damaged infrastructures. As early as 1946 could be included on the first two lines again the operation. Line 3 was followed a year later. In 1957, the first new vehicles came with the trams of the type Konstal 5N 5ND and after Elbląg. In the present day is still a traction 5N 5 ND ( car numbers 012 and 154 ) operative, which runs on special occasions. At the beginning of the 1970s, the People's Republic of Poland decided to decommission meter gauge tram networks in most Polish cities. This should be done well in Elblag. The tram then Elbląger but did not share the fate of the trams in Bielsko- Biała, Legnica and Olsztyn. Since 1980, the use of new vehicles of the type Konstal 805Na that are still used today began. In 1986, a new route in the district Zawada was put into operation.

As a result of the political changes in Poland, there was, as in other Polish cities in Elbląg to a decline in passenger numbers in public transport. At the beginning of 1987, the old type cars Konstal 5N were replaced by younger second-hand cars from Germany type Duewag GT6. Only at the beginning of the 21st century and with the accession of Poland to the European Union, the city of Elbląg in the environmentally friendly public transport began to invest. Thanks to the EU -Fons, the rail network was renewed and new lines are being built. In 2002, a new route on the Pulkownik dabka Street was opened, the two new lines (4 and 5) is operated. For the near future are before major changes. By 2013, 15 km of track will be renewed and new low floor railcar to be procured. The first six cars of the PESA 121N of PESA Bydgoszcz were delivered in late 2006. Wherever possible, modernized Konstal 805Na replacing the German Duewag GT6 and complement the low-floor vehicles.

In May 2006, the building of a distance in the direction of Fromborska Street began the settlement Nad Jarem. On December 21, the section was officially opened together with the introduction of the new low-floor trams. In the following years there were in accidents repeatedly to derailment of PESA 121N. In the coming years the procurement of two additional low-floor vehicles is planned.
