Tranquillo Barnetta (born 22 May 1985 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss football player, but he has also got the Italian passport. Both parents are of Italian origin.
Association
Barnetta learned to play football at small St. Gallen Quartier FC Rotmonten. His talent was recognized early, so that he soon moved to FC St. Gallen. There he began his pro career in 2002 and won already as a 17 -year-old a regular place.
For the season 2004 /05 Barnetta joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He was awarded 96 in his first season in the Premier League rivals Hannover to gain match practice. However, he came out due to injury on only seven missions, where he scored two goals.
Before the season 2005/ 06 he returned to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. With his six goals this season and seven assists, he was among the top performers of his team and was one of the guarantors of the advance in 5th place in the second round and reaching the UEFA Cup. In the following season, although he only reach a goal and two assists, but he was still a regular player and stood in 30 games on the court. Also in the following years remained Barnetta a fixed size in the factory self and was always a goal threat. In the 2008 /09 season the Swiss joined with Leverkusen until the final of the DFB Cup, where the team SV Werder Bremen defeated. The 2010/11 season Barnetta began again as starting player, shortly after the beginning of the season he retired but in a test match a medial meniscus tear to the long put him out of action. Only on Matchday 27, he returned to the team and played for the rest of the season not a complete game more. It was the first year in which he played less than 30 league appearances for Bayer. Nevertheless, he achieved the 2nd place team with the best result of his career in the Bundesliga. Before the start of season 2011/12 he moved to a muscle ligaments. That's why he was missing until March 2012. March 17, 2012, he was represented against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the squad, but was not used. On 24 March 2012, he made his comeback when he came off the bench 27 on match against Schalke 04 in 71 minutes of André Schurrle. Against 1 FC Kaiserslautern and Hertha BSC against him reach each one assist. By the end of the season, a total of seven point stakes, where he once played over 90 minutes. An extension of his June 30, 2012 expiring contract declined from Barnetta; he left Leverkusen after eight years.
In the summer of 2012 FC Schalke 04 Barnetta committed. At Schalke he received a contract until 30 June 2015. The first season was unsatisfactory for Barnetta. Although he came up with 21 appearances in the Bundesliga, but he was only two times in the first eleven and just completed a game about 90 minutes. In all three competitions he failed to score, only one assist in the Bundesliga. Against the competition as the experienced Jefferson Farfan or the young Lewis Holtby and Julian Draxler he could not sit down and fell far short of expectations.
On September 2, 2013 Barnetta was awarded for the rest of the season at Eintracht Frankfurt.
National
Barnetta went through all Swiss junior national teams. In 2002 he won the U -17 European championship titles and took part in the 2004 Under-21 European Championship in Germany.
He was appointed in early June 2004 as a replacement for the injured Johann Lonfat in the squad of the Swiss national team for the Euro 2004, came in the tournament itself, but not used. His debut in the national team was then carried out in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland on 8 September 2004.
His first international goal he scored on 1 March 2006 in a 3-1 success of the Swiss team against Scotland in Glasgow for intermediate 1-0. On 19 June 2006 Barnetta was the second World Cup group match against Togo with a goal and an assist in the 2-0 victory of his team at.
