Transcoding

Transcoding is the conversion of an audio or video file to another audio format or video format.

The term recoding is used when the source and destination format are identical and only properties of the media object to be changed. For example, if the contents of a video DVD (MPEG -2 approximately ) is reduced in resolution and frame rate just to save space. The format of the media object remains the same.
