Trattoria

The Trattoria ( accent on the i ) is a term for a Gaststättenart. In the small Italian eateries simple dishes are prepared and offered. The atmosphere is familiar and thus differs from that of a restaurant. Trattorias are typical of rural Italy. In the cities there are other eateries that often offer only a simple dish ( or a small selection) for lunch and stay closed in the evening. However, there are very good and expensive trattorias, which ultimately differ only by a somewhat more familiar atmosphere of a restaurant. In Italy there are usually not in a trattoria pizza while a trattoria is something like an upscale pizzeria in Germany.

The word derives from Italian trattore ' maker ' (of food ).
