Tre Kronor (castle)

The Tre Kronor castle was a castle which was create in the center of Stockholm Birger Jarl in the middle of the 13th century. She stood on the spot where now stands the Stockholm Palace, and consisted of a stronghold and a wall reinforced farmyard.

The name Tre Kronor ( Three Crowns) probably dates from the mid-14th century, when Magnus II reigned. After Gustav Vasa had triggered Sweden from the Kalmar Union in 1521, he made the castle to the royal headquarters and let them be provided with further defenses. Under his son John III. the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle with church.

On 7 Maijul. / May 17 1697greg. The castle was almost completely destroyed by a devastating fire. The architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, who had recently made ​​some changes to the old castle, was commissioned at the same location to build the new Stockholm Palace.
