Treaty of Guarantee (1960)

The London Treaty of Guarantee of 1959 is one of the contracts on the declaration of Cyprus as an independent state, concluded between Cyprus on one side and Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom on the other side. The contract was signed together with a number of other treaties, conventions and declarations (Zurich and London Agreement ) on February 19, 1959 at Lancaster House in London.

The Parties recognize with the London Treaty of Guarantee to the anchored in the Cypriot constitution independence, territorial integrity and security of Cyprus.

Cyprus undertakes that it will not be partly incorporated to whole island even to another state. All activities in Cyprus, seeking annexation to another country, or the division of the island, Cyprus has to stop. (Art. 1)

Analog have Greece, Turkey and Britain to stop all taking place in their countries Angliederungs or Teilungsanstrebungen regarding Cyprus. (Art. 2)

This agreement determines Greece, Turkey and Britain as guarantor powers of Cyprus. In case of violation of the provisions of this contract by Cyprus, these three countries come together for the time being and advise on a common approach to restore the injured by Cyprus treaty provisions. If no agreement is reached in the coming together of these three countries, each of the three guarantor powers has the right unilaterally to take action with the sole aim of restoring the provisions of this Treaty to the island.

The contract was signed by the respective Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis (Greece ), Adnan Menderes (Turkey) and Harold Macmillan ( UK). On behalf of the Greek Cypriots signed Archbishop Makarios III. and on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots signed Fazıl Dr. Küçük.

After the signing of the Zurich and London Agreement, the preparatory phase began, which ended in August 1960. In the elections on 13 December 1959, Archbishop Makarios III. elected president and Dr. Fazıl Küçük vice-president.
