Treaty of Saint Petersburg (1875)

The Treaty of Saint Petersburg in 1875 concluded between Japan and Russia. In this renounced Japan on the island of Sakhalin in favor of the Kuril Islands to the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Treaty of Shimoda had left Sakhalin territory without clearly defined boundaries, which led to conflicts between Russian and Japanese settlers. To remedy the situation, the Japanese government Enomoto Takeaki sent as ambassador to St. Petersburg, to define the boundaries of Sakhalin exactly.
