Triangulation (chess)

The triangle maneuver is a common motif in chess endgames.

Especially in pawn endings, there are positions in which it is beneficial to lose a tempo. This means that the player is located at the train leads back to the same position brought about, however, so that the opponent is on the train. This is useful if the opponent thus be in a tight spot and therefore, for example, has to give up in a pawn ending often important opposition of kings.

At the triangle maneuvers typically results in the King of the stronger party of three trains to return to his starting field - so his path describes a triangle. Meanwhile reaches the opponent's king because of certain circumstances the position of the output field after two trains, which his party is then at its train.

It is also possible, but rarely are triangle maneuver the lady of the tower and the rotor. In these cases, during the maneuver of Figurenweg need not necessarily be a triangle. Springer and farmers, however, are at no triangle maneuver in the situation because these stones can not return to their original field in three rounds.

Example

In this position Black has the opposition, thus preventing further advancement of the white king. Wanted White by 1.c6 ? win immediately, Black could by 1 .. KC8! hold a draw. However, White can run a triangle maneuvers in the fields d5, e5 and d4 to shift the Zugpflicht on black:
