Triathlon equipment#Triathlon bicycles

A triathlon bike is a specially designed for triathlon bike type. When long distance triathlon a 180 km route with the wheel has to be covered, in the middle distance about 80-90 km, in the short Triathlon 40 as well as the People's distance about 20-27 km. Frequently there is a so-called slipstream prohibition, that is, the participants may not dense shuttling consecutively, but must have a certain minimum distance (typically ten meters) comply. The air resistance of the overall design of a triathlon wheel should be as low as possible. Compared to pure racing bikes but triathlon bikes are generally slightly heavier, but more aerodynamic, which has the disadvantage of slightly higher weight more than makes up for.

With flat stretches a horn-shaped handlebars will be used. It is provided with a showing to the front, top, resting on the elbows and forearms. In addition to the very flat, aerodynamic posture which has the advantage that the upper arms can relax after swimming a bit. At the front end of the essay are the shift lever, can be so connected in the aero position. If an electronic switch group used, it is possible shift buttons on the handlebar attachment and on the base bar to install. Is the handlebar attachment provided with an appropriate hydration system, can also be drunk in the aero position, without having to leave them. The brake levers are mounted on the other hand on the handlebars. The impellers are often particularly aerodynamically shaped (eg, with high- profile wheels, disc wheels and so-called trispokes ). The front brakes are partially (eg Cervelo P5 ) are integrated into the front fork, or even mounted behind this.

The seat tube angle is 76-78 degrees with a bit steeper than the road bike, so the thighs do not bump to the upper body while pedaling. This position is to the muscles for the subsequent run charge a little less. The rear is very short. Originally, therefore, 26 "wheels are used. Meanwhile, one finds mainly triathlon bikes with 28" wheels were run as in the Road ( in normal-sized men). The geometry makes such a wheel, for example, compared to a road bike top-heavy and demanding to drive.

The height difference between the handlebars and saddle in triathlon bikes with partly more than 10 cm usually quite large, with the mid / late 1990s popular extreme position is no longer common. For the use of a triathlon wheel in competitions without slipstream release the following guidelines for a triathlon apply according to German Triathlon Union:

  • Front and rear wheels must be equal. Disc wheels are rear only allowed and must be supporting.
  • The handlebar attachment must not be open and protrude beyond the front axle to a maximum of 15 cm to the front.
  • The wheel must each have a functioning, independent -to-use front and rear brake. The brake lever must point backwards.
  • The wheel can be up to 2 m long. The distance from the floor to the rear axle must be at least 24 cm.
  • Any form of deflectors is prohibited.
  • The wheel must have a triangular frame of three straight or inclined pipes.
  • All " non-traditional " constructions are generally prohibited, unless they are approved by the Race Director before the race.
  • Laid down by the UCI minimum weight of 6.8 kg, it is not in the triathlon.

Professional and semi-professional triathlon bikes weigh about 7-9 kg.

Triathlon bikes are similar to the time trial bikes in time trials. The geometry of the time trial bikes but more restricted by the regulations of the UCI. " - Or 28" Therefore, only 27 are wheels used and the seat angle is not as steep as the triathlon.
