Trilogy is the fourth album by the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released on 6 July 1972. It was recorded in January of the same year in the Advision Studios in London.
The album
Unlike the previous album Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy contains only one facility arranged pieces; Hoedown from the ballet Rodeo by Aaron Copland. Hoedown and The Sheriff belonged longer time to Liveprogamm of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and are also on the live album Welcome back ... to hearing from 1974. The last piece of the album, Abaddon 's Bolero has with its crescendo and the appearance of more and more instruments ( here realized by overdubs ) similarities with the famous Boléro by Maurice Ravel.
The gatefold cover was designed by the British firm Hipgnosis. On the front there is a painting of the band members in three-quarter profile of Phil Grennell, inside a photomontage showing the band multiplied in an autumn forest.
Reception
The album reached number 2 in the British charts at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and published as a single song From the Beginning, reaching number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100
Wrote François Couture by allmusic that the group here that won compared to the previous albums of maturity, what it has lost in raw energy. For prog rock newcomers it was a less threatening entry. He gave the album four out of five stars.
