Tristão Vaz Teixeira

Tristão Vaz Teixeira (c. 1395, † 1480) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer, the 1418/1419 the Madeira Archipelago, discovered together with João Gonçalves Zarco and Perestrelo.

In all official documents it was called Tristão Vaz. Later Branca Teixeira became his wife. Gomes Eanes de Azurara He was, according to Knight at the court of Henry the Navigator. In recognition of his services he was invested as Governor General with half of the island of Madeira ( Machico on the page).

With Zarco he discovered in 1418 that the Madeira archipelago belonging island of Porto Santo, for the deforestation it should be according to a legend responsible for the suspension of a pregnant rabbit. This was followed in 1419 the discovery of the main island of Madeira. The investiture of Machico was performed according to the deed on May 11, 1440th Because of abuse of office he was removed in 1452 of all of its features.

The numerous descendants from his marriage with Branca Teixeira still live throughout the archipelago. Tristão Vaz Teixeira died at a great age in Silves in the Algarve.
